Christina McKinnon is a native of Miami and owner of the Law Office of Christina A. McKinnon, P.A., where she specializes in the areas of Personal Injury and Family matters. She received a B.A. in Political Science from Florida State University in 1997 and the degree of Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University in 2001. While pursuing her law degree as an evening student, Christina was also successful as the Urban Initiatives Manager at the Beacon Council, assisting companies in targeted areas expand their local operations thereby increasing employment opportunities in Miami-Dade County. At The Beacon Council, she facilitated the creation of nearly 300 new jobs in the county by educating local businesses and companies considering relocation on incentives and services available through federal, state and local government.
Christina was instrumental in The Beacon Council’s participation in the Black Enterprise (BE) Entrepreneur’s Conference in 2000, providing her a forum to market Miami-Dade County’s diverse community assets to over 500 companies throughout the United States and the Caribbean. She also implemented a program to induce companies to hire welfare-to-work employees, where each company was paid an incentive per employee to reduce the welfare rolls in Miami-Dade County. The total amount of the grant was $2.5 Million, and the funds were completely exhausted by the success of the program. Christina was also a speaker at the Miami Minority and Women-Owned Business Empowerment Conference in 2000.
She left The Beacon Council in order to obtain legal experience and worked as a law clerk for Devine Goodman Pallot & Wells, the Law Office of Larry Handfield and the Law Office of H.T. Smith. Before starting her own practice, Christina worked as an Associate Administrator/Labor Specialist with Jackson Health System, where she was responsible for three major labor union contracts governing Attending Physicians, Registered Nurses and Resident Interns.
Christina demonstrates her commitment to her hometown by serving her community well. She was the Hands on Miami Project Coordinator at the Community Partnership for the Homeless for the past 3 years, where she conducted a family literacy program for the organization’s youth. Christina received the 2005 ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’ by the Children’s Psychiatric Center/All-Aboard Educational Services for her commitment to the homeless. She was named the 2004-2005 ‘Newcomer of the Year’ by The Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association (a designation for outstanding lawyers in their first 5 years of practice). She is currently the President-Elect of the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association. Christina is a member of the Greater Miami Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and is also a member of the Mayor’s Taskforce for Urban Economic Revitalization in Miami-Dade County. In 2006, she was honored as a ‘Woman Who Makes a Difference’ by the Junior League of Miami and honored by both Success South Florida and InFocus magazines. InFocus Magazine recognized her as their ‘Business Advocate of the Year’ last October. Also in 2006, she was appointed to The Florida Bar Board of Governors Young Lawyers Division (the governing Board of all 22,000 lawyers under age 36 in the State of Florida) and has since been unanimously re-elected to the Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors for the next two years.
